Blogger Favorites II - Early 20th Century

For the second installment of my favorite photos by type, we look at the early 20th Century.
We start with a French physical education photo that might be by Prof. Desbonnet.

Leopold Mercier

These two wrestlers were photographed by Leopold Mercier in 1900.

Swimmers

I go goofy for vintage men in striped bathing suits,
but I wouldn't mind seeing Mr. Left without his.
Can I have it both ways, please?

Sturdy and Confident

This isn't the best photo in any technical sense, but the sturdy
build of the man and his confidence come shining through.

Atelier 1910

All I know about this one is that it came labeled "Atelier 1910."

Maurice Deriaz

When I last posted this 1902 Hercules themed photo, I mentioned that it might have been one of the Deriaz Brothers.  Turns out that it was Maurice Deriaz with an unexpected mustache.

Two sides

This is one of those "best of both worlds" photos that gets front and back in one shot.

Unexpected choice

More than a few of you are probably looking at this and wondering how it made a blogger favorites series.  Well, there's something about the happy looking fisherman that makes want to know him.  This working man is obviously comfortable in his own skin and exudes a special kind of masculinity.

Socks

When I first saw a thumbnail of this one, I thought he was wearing gladiator sandals.
On closer examination, however, I saw they were striped socks and fell in love.

Tumblr Snag

The last image in this round of early 19th Century favorites is from an long disappeared tumblr
blog called Antique Erotic.  It was a very well curated operation, and I miss it terribley.
I'm sure there's a Classical reference there somewhere, but it's lost on me.

Models Named Tom

Today's physique models have one thing in common besides being attractive and well built men.
They are all named Tom.  I'm posting them in alphabetical order by photographer,
and we start with Tom Douglas by AMG's Bob Mizer.

Bruce of LA

Tom Mathews went on an outing to the California desert
for this photo by Bruce Bellas, aka Bruce of LA.

John Graham

British photographer John Graham photographed Tom Knott (left) with an unknown model.
I posted this six years ago and thought it was worth a repeat.  I think they are beautiful.

Kris Studio

Chuck Renslow of Kris Studio photographed several
models named Tom, and this one is Tom Muscolino.

Dave Martin

Tom West posed for Dave Martin in 1965 in a photo
that seems better each time I look at it.

Scott Masters

Tom Darrin looks serious in this Scott Masters photo.

Metecue

We get a nice happy trail and a smile in this Metecue photo of Tom Pryor.

Pat Milo

Not that long ago, I posted a different Pat Milo photo of Tom Nevins.
I wish I had more than just two images of him.

Troy Saxon

Tom Pollack posed for Troy Saxon in the woods with a bamboo staff.

Unknown Photographer

I couldn't do a series on models named Tom without including Tom De Carlo.  I'm using this unattributed photo for two reasons.  First, I'm hoping someone knows the photographer,
and second, it's one of only a few photos of him that I haven't already posted.

Men in Gym Shorts by Request

Greg R. of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma sent in a request for more men in gym shorts, and I am happy to oblige.  This time, I am going with mostly championship level throwing event men from track and field.  We start with W.F. Roos, a Yale shot put and hammer throw star from about 1910.

Klaus Wolfermann

German Klaus Wolfermann won the Gold for the javelin throw at the 1972 Olympics.
If you look closely, you'll see a peekaboo bulge coming out of his right shorts leg.
And as is typical for this type of athlete, his thighs are amazing.

Kenneth Carpenter

Kenneth Carpenter was an American discus thrower who appeared
in Leni Riefenstahl's 1936 movie, Olympia.  An NCAA and AAU
champion in the 1930s, he went on to a successful coaching career.

Football Team

These eleven men appear to be an American football team,
but several searches failed to locate them.

Geoff Capes

Englishman Geoff Capes was a celebrated shot putter, a sport which he won at the Commonwealth Games and placed in at the European championship level.  He went on the a second career in the Highland Games throwing events and won World's Strongest Man twice.

Tom Petranoff

American Javelin thrower Tom Petranoff set a world record in 1983
and won Silver at the World Championship that same year.

Patrick Ryan

As one of the Irish-American weight throwers known as the Irish Whales, Patrick Ryan was
phenomenal at the hammer throw.  He set a world record in 1913 that stood for 25 years,
and won the Gold as the 1920 Olympics shown above.

Hal Connolly

American hammer throw champion Hal Connolly gets a congratulatory handshake as he leaves the field.  (A friendly pat on the bottom might have been more appealing, but whatever.)
Mr. Connolly won the Gold in his chosen sport at the 1956 Olympics.
By the way, the thighs on both these men ae impressive.

Louis Hostin

This is French weightlifter Louis Hostin, and he participated in the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Olympics.
He won the Silver in '28 and Gold in both '32 and '36 for his weight class.

Danes

These are Danish athletes doing a physical culture demonstration
on a good will visit to Washington, D.C. in 1923.

Miguel de la Quadra-Salcedo

Here we see Miguel de la Quadra-Salcedo winding up to throw the discus.  Although he was a highly regarded Spanish athlete, he never placed at the Olympic or World Championship levels.  He did go on to a very successful career as a TV journalist specializing in "brushfire" wars, having been
sentenced in absentia to death for filming the illegal execution of 300 Congolese rebels.

Bob Kuechenberg

Closing the gym shorts set with a "new" photo of pro footballer Bob Kuechenberg.  When I posted
two other photos of this finely aged man, he got several positive comments.
