Military Day

Posting another set of military men today, starting with four Germans from World War II.

Egypt 1916

Here we have some British in Egypt from 1916.

Wide and then close in

I'm showing the original version of this one above, and a cropped one below.
The men are WWI British troops in Mesopotamia.

Suckling Pig Farm

Lt. George C. Martin took this photo of a fellow British soldier on a suckling pig farm in 1915.
Looks more like a fruit orchard to me, but I suppose it could be both.

Ledo reprise

As requested by several viewers, here is anothe view of a chubby guy washing
his truck on the Ledo Road in Burma.  The photo is by Bernard Hoffman.

Germans

German soldiers in the 20th Century were not known for modesty, but these men on the
Eastern Front have put on suits for a swim.  Although there is no water in sight,
my usually reputable source says that they were out for a relaxing swim.

Gafsa

Here's another dual view.  This time its a photo by Eliot Elisofon from the Roman Baths at Gafsa.

Guadalcanal

These GIs are washing themselves and their Jeep on Guadalcanal.

Navy Men

Underwear photos have been getting a good viewer response lately, so here's one more from the U.S. Navy.  The tattooed man has his name marked on his boxers.  They look friendly.

Another view

Closing out military day with yet another view of this group of Americans getting a shower in World War II.  An unknown (to me, anyway) photographer took about half a dozen photos of these guys cleaning up.  They have shown up on resale websites, blogs, and who knows where else.  I found this particular one for sale on eBay by someone called Chuck.

George Platt Lynes Day

I recently stumbled across some "new" material by George Platt Lynes, so I'm presenting ten
of those photos today.  We start with a beautifully lighted Blanchard Kennedy.

Contact Sheet I

Some G.P. Lynes contact sheets came onto the market recently, and I cropped this image from one of them.  Contact sheets are a "down and dirty" cheap developing process thatr allow the photographer to get a good idea of which images on a roll of film are worth the cost of full processing.  I'm really surprised that nothing from this group of photos seems to have been completed.  Perhaps they are lurking some where in a private collection.

Pair

This unknown pair made me think of Ted Starkowski and
Chuck Howard for a moment, but I don't think it's them.

Quintet

This photo from 1941 is interesting, to say the least.
The smoky effect is said to have been intentional.

Alfred Herrick

The lighted portion of Alfred Herrick's body looks almost liquid.

1940

This is another one for which I have only a date, 1940.

Chuck Howard

Chuck Howard was George Platt Lynes' lover before he tood up with Ted Starkowski.
Mr. Lynes took a number of photos of him, but only a few were nudes.

Robert McVoy

This impressive model is Robert McVoy from 1941.

Christopher and Harvey

These two are Christopher Isherwood and Harvey Young from 1935.

Contact Sheet II

Our last G.P. Lynes photo is from a different contact sheet which was labeled "Sailors."
The model looks more like a bodybuilder, but I suppose he could have been both.

Roy Blakey Day

Sometimes referred to as "the other male nude photographer named Roy" in reference to Roy Dean, Roy Blakey took up photography full time when an injury (and age) ended his career as a skater in the Ice Capades and Holiday on Ice.  Today we will look at some of his work, starting with this unknown model in Da Vinci's Vitruvian pose.

Grinning duo

I think everyone was having fun when they made this one.

Missing knee

Despite the technical and aesthetic excellence here, I can't stop thinking about the missing knee.

Darryl Robinson

The lighting and the pose approach perfection in this photo of Darryl Robinson.

Slightly out of focus

I don't know if the slightly out of focus effect on this photo was intentional or not.
It makes me think of those glamor shots women got in the 90s.

Contrast

Multiple layers of contrast in this photo.

Looks familiar

I really feel like I should know this Roy Blakey model's name, but I don't.

Over the shoulder

Like most of today's models, I don't have a name for this final one.
