Recently Acquired Academic Art

I recently came across a website that had a large assortment of drawings labeled "Academic Art, Public Domain."  None were labeled, although a few had markings.  All appear to be late 19th or early 20th C.  Today we will look at ten of those, starting with this statuesque young bearded man.

 

Middle aged

This is one of several pieces in my recent acquistions labeled "H 93."

This one is a real example of practice and learning, as well as the

eternal need of the poor student to save money on paper.

 

Two bodies

The artist here drew the model's body twice.

 

Two faces

I really like this one with two different faces from1908.

 

1908

The signature on this one seems partly cut off, but the year, 1908, is clear.

 

Looking

I don't know what the model is doing with that line in his hand, 

but he is looking at it quite keenly.  His back is beautiful.

 

Those hands

The model here has a weak chin and his hands in an odd position.

 

1913?

I really like the shading on this drawing.  I can't make 

out the signature, but I think the year was 1913.

 

Unconventional

I find the pose here somewhat uncoventional, but quite effective.

 

H '93

Our last drawing has the initial H and 93, probably the year 1893.

 

Amateur Day

It's amateur day, and we start with a guy who has old fashioned furniture and wallpaper.

I can't tell if this one is flexing or holding up the tapestry.

I think this guy looks like he's cornered on the couch.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong,

but I think these are Soviet sailors.

This bodybuilder looks small, but sturdy.

 

San Francisco

This one is supposed to have been taken on a San Francisco rooftoop in the 1970s,

 

Beauty Pageant Snapshot

This is supposed to be a snapshot someone took at a bodybuilding contest, aka male beauty pageant.

Theres a guy in the background who looks like he's playing a bass fiddle.

1960s FKK Men at the Beach

It's 1960s FKK men at the beach day, and we start with a young man 

from 1961 who looks like he's waiting for the volleyball to arrive.

 

1965

Our only color photo of the day is from 1965.

 

1966 I

By 1966, most FKK magazines had advanced to a pretty high standard of photo technical quality.  

This picture, however, looks like a throwback to the bad old days of grainy images.

 

1966 II

These two guys at the beach in 1966 are tossing a driftwood log instead of a medicine ball.

 

1967 I

In the first of three 1967 photos in todays set,

we get a guy who's blond up and down.

 

1967 II

These 1967 snorkelers don't present the clearest photo,

but we can tell that the two at right are well built.

 

1967 III

These beach fishermen are our third FKK photo from 1967.

 

1968 I

I don't know what those  finger gestures incidate,

but this one seems to be confidently striding.

 

1968 II

I think this guy may be Danish.

 

1969

Our last 1960s FKK beach types are two guys on what looks like a California beach.

This being FKK, however, I'd guess it's Italy or Greece.
