It's military set today, and we start with an induction exam

where the doctor is using a primitive stethoscope.

Haircut

I don't know why this GI felt like he needed to keep his rifle handy while getting his hair cut as  

It doesn't look like they are in a combat area.  Maybe he was late for his turn at the rifle range.

 

Barracks Fun

Bored soldiers in the barracks will do almost anything to entertain themselves.

 

Delousing

When I first saw those boilers at left, I started looking for a mobile shower unit.

The actual cause for the mass nudity was apparently delousing, however.

 

WWI Germans

These World War I German troops are enjoying a dip in what looks like a canal sluice.

 

Candid

Something tells me that this photo of a soldier and his very fine derriere was candid.

 

Swedes

Our only color photo of the day is supposed to be two men

from a 1970s Swedish chemical decontamination unit.

 

Algeria?

I'm not sure, but I think this photo is from Algeria 

during the French colonial war there 1954-62.

 

New Guinea

My source didn't say, but our ending photo looks like it was made 

in New Guinea in the early part of the WWII Pacific Campaign.

The men appear to be doing  their washing.

 

Dave Martin at the Beach

Dave Martin is known for his use of bayside locations in the San Francisco area, but today we 

will look at some photos made at Pacific beaches.  We might as well start with Tony Farrell, 

seeing as how he appears no less than three times in today's series.

Edward Hopper

Edward Hopper (1882-1967) was one of the most highly acclaimed American artists of his time, 

and today we will look at some of his male nude sketches, paintings, and studies.  That's a self 

portrait above, and below we  have one of his better known works, 1942's Nighthawks.

 

Mustache

I love the model's mustache in this one, and is that 

an exclamation point or a smudge at upper right?

 

Interesting

The model's bottom is half on and half off the chair in this interesting drawing.

 

Multiples

Mr. Hopper did multiple drawings of the model's hands and feet for this study,

something that I've seen only a few times before from other artists.

 

Academic?

Although my source did not say so, I think this oil painting may be an academic work.

 

Older Model

Here we see what I believe are two drawings of the same older 

bearded model from both the front and rear directions.

 

Rough

Although rough looking at first glance, there are some anatomical details in this drawing.

 

Staff

Mr. Hopper carefully shaded this study of a young man with a staff.

 

Painting II

I think this is another academic oil painting.

 

Characters?

Our closing drawing shows a side view of a man with his hands clasped.

That vertical row of marks at right looks like Japanese characters, 

but my Japanese friend says he can't read them.
