Francesco Scavullo

Best known for his excellent and sometimes quirky photos of celebrities, Francesco Scavullo
(1921-2004) dabbled in male nudes in the mid to late 1970s.  Today we will look at a mix
of nude models and celebrities, with one notorious guy who was both.  The model in the
promotional piece above and below is Sterling St. Jacques from 1978

Christopher Reeve

It was 1977 when Francesco Scavully photographed Christopher Reeve.

Unknown

Google Images Search was no help in trying to ID this Francesco Scavullo model.  Anyone?

Arnold

We get just a hint of bush in the Francesco Scavullo photo of Arnold Schwarenegger from 1976.

Bruce Jenner

This is Bruce Jenner.  He's gone through some changes
since Francesco Scavullo took this photo in 1977.

Little Joe . . . again and again and again

Was there a photographer active in the late 60s and early 70s who didn't photograph
Joe Dallesandro nude?  I doubt it.  This is Francesco Scavullo's version.
"Little Joe never once gave it away
Everybody had to pay and pay."

Jay and Jed Johnson

These two are twins Jay and Jed Johnson.  In 1968 they got on a train from California to Montreal, but were thrown off in Buffalo because the conductor thought they were draft dodgers fleeing to Canada.  They went to New York instead where they became messengers for Western Union.  Jed dropped off a telegram at Andy Warhol's studio, and was hired as a janitor on the spot.  Before long, the two were part of Warhol's entourage, many of whom were photographed by Scavullo.

Sting

This is Sting from 1984, and yes, it was meant to be cropped this way.  Francesco Scavullo
took a literal crucfixion photo in the same session, but I like this one much more.

Reminds me

The style of this one reminds me of Jack Mitchell's photos of dancers.

Dick Cavett

Our last Francesco Scavullo photo is Dick Cavett in 1977 reading a book in his socks and BVDs
while standing on a towel.  I had no idea Mr. Cavett looked so good without his suit.

John Barrington Day

Today we look at the very technically uneven work of John Barrington.  Although he used very good models and usually posed them nicely, his photo developing and printing could sometimes leave a lot to be desired.  Other times, however, he could be quite good technically, so expect some uneven quality.  We start with the first of two unknowns in today's set.

Gunter Hartwig

We get a nice clear image of a soapy Gunter Hartwig in this shot.

Pierre

Frequent contributor and commentator Cambria posted this Barrington photo on an online board.  The model is known only as Pierre and the year was 1958.  Thank you, Cambria!  From what I've seen, Barrington's work on the French Riviera produced better prints than most of his work at home in London.  Perhaps he farmed out the developing and printing in France?

Marcel James

This photo of Marcel James sitting against a wall is quite good.
When he put effort into it, Barrington could turn out quality prints.

Roy and Vic

Roy Scammell and Vic Haywood did some memorable work together for John Barrington.
The photographer's photo finishing here was also memorable, but not in a good way.

Peter Rann

Ricky Alboni

In addition to the usual Barrington developing issues, this photo
of Ricky Alboni managed to get creased after it was printed.

Jimmie Stephenson

Vic Solo

This time we get Vic Haywood solo, along with some specks and blotches.

Mystery

This last photo is one that I picked up in the last days of tumblr labeled only "Barrington."
If it is by him, the technical quality is a bit above the usual.

Mike Morris Day

As promised a few weeks ago, we're having Mike Morris Day.

On the fence

I like this photo, but couldn't Jim French have acquired some real cowboy boots instead of those gay clone boots?  The hat wasn't exactly current for the time, but it's at least passable.

Exercise Guide

Only a diehard Mike Morris fan will know where this one came from.  This is actually an instructional photo from an exercise guide published by no one less than Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Surely someone on Ahnold's production team knew that Mike was a gay porn star.

Cropping issue

Although I don't like the cropping here, I can find no fault with Mr. Morris.

Sailor I

This is the first of two Colt sailor themed shots of Mike Morris in today's set.

Mandate

Although I'm not sure if this was a centerfold, it appears to have been a two page item in Mandate.

Barn

This was taken in a barn or hayloft during one of Jim French's cowboy shoots.

Chow time for a horse

Mike Morris could feed my horse any time.

Colt Calendar

My source says that this is from a Colt calendar.

Sailor II

The last photo in the Mike Morris set is another Colt sailor themed one.
