Tony Patrioli

Tony Patrioli (1941-2017) was an Italian photographer who took up male nude photography after being inspired by Von Gloeden.  In fact, I erroneously posted one of his photos as a Von Gloeden about six years ago.  Above is a picture that also seems of that ilk.  Mr. Patrioli is best known for his nude and seminude photos of young men, many of which we might call twinks.  Unlike Von Gloeden,
he does not appear to have used under age models.

Architectural

The architectural element is this one frames the model nicely.

In the bushes

Many of you would love to meet these two coming out of the bushes.

Composition

This is one of several photos in today's series that have
what I consider to be excellent composition.

Beach or stream?

I can't tell if this one was taken at a rocky beach or in a mountain stream.

More Von Gloeden

Here's another one that looks inspired by Von Gloeden.

More Color

This summary is not available. Please click here to view the post.

Bark texture

The branches and texture of the bark are nice in this one.

Egyptian Lamp

The Egyption themed lamp is an interesting composition element,
but that's probably not what most of you are looking at.

Tiziano Sossi

This handsome fellow is Tiziano Sossi, an Italian actor, film maker, and biographer of poets who posed for Tony Patrioli for these portraits around 1992.  I know it is past my 1985 cutoff for vintage, but I don't think anyone will complain.  Mr. Patrioli knew how to photograph more than twinks.

Desert Dudes Day, Part 1 - Bob Mizer of AMG

Today we have a two parter featuring men in the desert.  Part one is AMG, and part two is by Bruce of LA.  Above we see Bob Mizer's photo of Forrester Milliard and Jim Miller.

Ed Fury

I found this AMG photo of Ed Fury in a dry stream bed over on Men From Back Then.
I would put in a link, but the site has sadly been inactive since January 12.

Massed Group

Although I can't make them out, Brian Idol, Jack Renio, and Jim Horn are supposed to be in the group shot.  I suspect that this was a co-production with Wyngate & Bevins, but I'm not positive.

Gene Eberle

Bob Mizer of AMG did a memorable photo shoot with Gene Eberle
posed on a rock outcrop somewhere in the California desert.

Monte Hanson and Unknown

Finishing the AMG segment with Monte Hanson (right) and an unknown.

Desert Dudes, Part 2 - Bruce of Los Angeles

We start part two with two unknowns (to me anyway) by Bruce.

Unknown

The model is unknown for this Bruce photo
with a dead tree and a ruin.

Jerry Debry

Bruce took this photo on a 1950s trip to Utah, and the model
is Jerry Debry, a recent Mr. Utah winner.

Foster Brother

I think this is one of the Foster brothers, Charles and Lewis,
but I'm not really sure which one.

Phil Knight

Our last entry in the Bruce section is the always impressive Phil Knight.

Going to the Baths, Part 1 - Some History

We have a two parter today on going to the baths, and part one goes into some history.
It was the Turks who carried the Roman bath concept into modern times,
so I'm starting with this undated photo that I like.

France

This is a treatment room at Evian-les-Bains, France, early 20th Century.

Everard

Irish immigrant and brewer James Everard established the Everard Baths on New York's west side in 1888.  It was palacial by the standards of the time, and by 1910 it was a known gay cruising site.  It was ever referred to as "Everhard."  Sadly, a tragic 1977 fire killed nine men, and even though the owners rebuilt and reopened, Everard's closed for good at the height of the AIDS crisis.
Below, a photo from the New York Herald in 1905.

Berlin, Early 20th C.

This is the Admiralspalast in Berlin, early 20th Century.
It looks more like a gentleman's club than a bath
house, but the towels are the giveaway.

Savoy 1951

This was taken at the Savoy Baths in London in 1951.
The place started attracting gays in the 1930s,
but it was still a mixed crowd much of the time.

Going to the Baths, Part 2 - The 1970s

The second half of our bath house special features photos thought to be from
the 1970s,the heyday of the phenomenon before AIDS came crashing in.
We start with what looks like a screen grab from a VHS movie.

Atlanta 1976

My source says this was the Club Baths Atlanta in 1976
What's with all the gear hanging on the wall?
It looks like a tack room for leather toys.

1979

Rod S. of Chicago sent me this photo of an unknown
bath house shower from 1979.

On the sly

I get the feeling this one was taken on the sly.

1976

This was supposedly made at the Club Baths chain
flagship franchise in New York City in 1976.

Tubs

Some referred to the gay baths as "the tubs."  Actual bathtubs were not
all that common, but I managed to find one in the picture avove.
I'm not sure if this was the cleaner or some eager bottom.
