Navy Day

It's Navy Day, and we start with some sailors getting hosed off on deck.

Shore Party

This photo is from a group taken of a group of sailors
at a Pacific island beach party during World War II.

Hide the Soap

I'm sure some creative sailor found a special place to hide the soap.

Candid Camera

I wonder where this sailor's friends took their snapshot to get it developed.

Shore Leave

These four sailors on shore leave saved money by sharing a hotel room.
They shoved the beds together so they could all fit nice and comfy.

Baths on Board

This German warship had showers installed under a decktop catwalk.

Crusty

Something tells me they called this guy "Crusty."

Submarine

These German submariners are washing up on deck.

Very friendly

This looks like a very friendly group of sailors.  Look closely.

Blurry Crowd

Here's another group hosing off on deck.  It's a blurry crowd.

Crusty Pair

Maybe these two were friends of the crusty fellow from earlier today.

Hmmm . . .

Is this the Navy base hotdog stand?
I'd gladly stand in line behind him.

Soviets

I think these are Soviet Sailors from the 1970s.

Tan lines

We can see the undershirt tan lines on this sailor.
The ship in the background may be in drydock.

Jimmie DeSana Day

This summary is not available. Please click here to view the post.

Favorite model

In his early days at Georgia State, Jimmie DeSana used classmates and friends as models.
We will see this felllow in several of today's photos.

Long legs

I think Jimmie DeSana posed this model with long legs
in such a way as to make them appear even longer.

1974 I

In the first of two photos in today's set definitively dated at 1974
we see a model whom I'm sure they called "Bubbles."

Same guy

This summary is not available. Please click here to view the post.

Table runner

I've heard of table runners, but this isn't quite the same.

1974 II

I think this might be a double self portrait from 1974.
Anyone know for sure?  My usual searches came up empty.

Curtains

This is said to be another of Jimmie DeSana's college friends from Georgia State U.

Distant

We get only a distant view of the model in this one,
but I think he's the same guy as in several of today's pictures.

Look for it

Our last Jimmy DeSana is a peeping Tom item in which one has to look for the key element.
In a future series I will post more of Mr. DeSana's later work, some of which looks like
it was made after a visit to Helga Hottenstotter's Academy of Discipline in Stuttgart.

Early 20th Century

Beginning another early 20th Century set with a Von Gloeden photo
said to have been made late in his career.

Cyrillic Script, Anyone?

Cyrillic script is beyond me, but perhaps someone will transliterate
the inscription so we might know who the model was.

1905

My source said only "French, 1905," but this looks to me like someone
cropped away Paul Richer's distinctive framing and enumeration.

Muscles

I just had a big "duh" moment.  I was wondering why I had so many photos in the 1890-1920 range with this pose or something very similar.  Then I realized how well it shows off a lot of muscles.

Fig leaf

I sometimes forget that there were some pretty good photos from the early 20th C. involving fig leaves.  As much as we might want to see more, this strong man's muscles are impressive.
I think the script at upper right says "Schulz," perhaps his name.

Seaside snapshot

This looks like one of Edvard Munch's seaside snapshots,
even down to the subject's beard, but I have no proof of that.

In the style of . . . again

This is yet another of those photos I found labeled "in the style of Professor Desbonnet,"
but not believed to actually have been made by him.

Enrique "Huaso" Puentes

Here we have Enrique "Huaso" Puente Gil, an early 20th Century Chilean
poet, musician, and intellectual who also took up bodybuilding.

Another naked soldier

A viewer recently commented that early 20th Century French soldiers seemed happy to pose nude.
I agreed with him, so today I'm posting a rear view, and I'm pretty sure he was smiling.

1920

Closing out the early 20th Century set with a photo that is supposed to be from a 1920 textbook.
I can't decide if they meant anatomy or art as the subject.
