Dick Falcon Day

This is Dick Falcon, a 1930s bodybuilder who took up photography himself.  Today we will look at some of his work.  I don't know if this is a self portrait or if someone else took it.

 

Tom Crabbe

This derriere view is Tom Crabbe.

I haven't been able to figure out if this April 1936 magazine cover 

is a photo of or if it is by Dick Falcon.

 

Unknown 345

This unknown Dick Falcon model had catalog number 345.

 

Dale Curry

Dale Curry was a popular model whose career extended from the late 1940s into the early 1960s.  He appeared in a Dick Falcon photo for MANual magazine and also in an ad, but I can find no more photos of him attributed to Mr. Falcon.  The ad promised at least six.  Anybody have more?

Darryl Powers

The beard and long hair may surprise some of you, but this is Champion model Darryl Powers, aka Lance Ponton, in a photo by Dick Falcon.  Mr. Falcon and Walter Kundzic of Champion Studio partnered for a while in the Sunset Beach Club nudist resort where Darryl worked and modeled.

 

Trio

The staging and hair styles in this one make me think that 

it was from early in Dick Falcon's career as a photographer.

Locker Room Day

It's locker room day, and we start with what I believe are some British footballers.

 

Steam

I like the way the men are looking at one another in this photo of a steam room.

 

Browns

This picture is so old that the Browns were still in St. Louis.

 

Baltimore

This is one of several photos taken in 1960 in the Baltimore Orioles locker room.

The men may be watching a TV news report of their just finished game.

 

Autograph party

That's Hank Aaron at left in the Braves locker room at a group baseball autographing session.

The player in the background wearing only a jockstrap is interesting.

 

1979

This is a 1979 Australian Rugby League medical exam.

Anyone know the handsome bear's name?

 

Crowd

Someone removed the LIFE watermark from this version of a crowded locker room.

 

Derek Sanderson

Boston Bruins hockey player Derek Sanderson is smiling because his father

brought him a packet of Bisto gravy mix, a Canadian favorite.

 

Treatment

This looks like a locker room treatment area where a trainer is working on a player

 in a jockstrap's elbow while another waits to have his knee looked at.  In the meantime, 

the guy at the sink seems to be gargling.  Busy little scene.

 

Dodgers

The last locker room photo of the set shows Kurt Spooner

 of the Dodgers hurrying off somewhere.

 

FKK Day, Part 1 - Campers

It's FKK Day, and we have a two parter.  We start with campers before moving on the every nudist's favorite sport volleyball.  This fellow from 1967 has just started setting up his tent.

 

1966

These 1966 campers seem to be setting up a framework

made from poles they cut and shaped themselves.

This guy seems to be staring at the ground in front of his tent.

 

1961

If you detect a Native American influence here, "cowboy and Indian" camping 

became quite a trend in the 1960s FKK.  My source says this is from 1961.

 

Hot drink

Our final FKK camper is enjoying both a hot beverage and a cigarette.

Based on the pine cones at his feet, I'd say he camped in the woods.

 

FKK Day, Part 2 - Volleyball

Just like American nudists, those FKK naturists had a thing for volleyball,

and part two of today's set shows them at it.

 

French

FKK publications became much more internationally oriented in the 1960s and 70s, 

and this French volleyball game is an example of that broader perspective.

Here we have a wide view of an FKK volleyball game with spectators.

This hairy chested guy was cropped from a larger 1972 

volleyball photo, which accounts for the grainy quality.
